Chemist. Porter served as a Radar Officer during the Second World War, but from 1949, at Cambridge University, developed the new technique of flash photolysis which, by means of short pulses of light made possible the study of extremely fast chemical reactions. With Ronald Norrish and Manfred Eigen he won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1967. President of the Royal Society (1985-90).
