A Student (Fellow) of Christ Church, Oxford, from 1837 to 1858, Marshall became Reader in Greek in 1846 and Censor in 1849. He was many times Moderator and Public Examiner, and in 1850 was Proctor. From 1857 to 1875 he was Rural Dean and Vicar at the little church of St Mary's, Pyrton, Oxfordshire, a living which had been in the gift of Christ Church since 1546 and which is now combined with the nearby village of Shirburn.
