Indian administrator; succeeded to title, 1845, and became Governor of Trinidad, 1846, and of Madras, 1854. As Governor of Madras, Harris effected administrative reforms and sent reinforcements to support his lifelong friend, Earl Canning, during the Indian Mutiny.
