An eminent painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, Lewis was a pupil of J.C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy schools. He first gained notice with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin's designs, which were published in 1803 as Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs.
