A lawyer by training, Harrison concentrated his efforts on writing and teaching. He taught history and Latin at the London Working Men's College founded by the Christian socialists in Bloomsbury. In the 1860s and 1870s, Harrison wrote regularly on British and French politics in the Fortnightly Review. His many publications include: the lives of Cromwell (1888) and Ruskin (1902), and his Meaning of History (1862).
