Smithson is shown here in her role as Hana in The Mousmé (Shaftesbury Theatre, 1911), a noble Geisha girl, who works in a tea-house to pay off her lover's gambling debts. The fashion for all things Japanese had been launched in London back in the 1860s, but continued right up until the First World War.
