Sartorius was awarded the Victoria Cross for an act of conspicuous bravery which took place in 1879 during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. As a captain in the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, Sartorius led a party of five or six men to storm a steep and rocky hill under Ghazi possession.
