After performing as a comedian during World War Two, Sykes worked as a radio and television scriptwriter, contributing to the Goon Show and the Tony Hancock Show. In 1960 he starred in his own television series Sykes and A ... alongside Hatti Jacques. The pair reunited in 1972 in the series Sykes which ran for seven years.
