Ellen Terry is shown here in character as the wine merchant's daughter, Catherine Duval in the play The Dead Heart (1889) at the Lyceum Theatre. The portrait was published in a souvenir programme alongside other portraits of Terry, her co-star and the play's producer, Henry Irving. Irving had to persuade Terry to take the part, and wrote to her quoting choice selections of the script to entice her with the challenge: 'It's really very short, but difficult to act...'
