The daughter of the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, Elisabeth turned to music at an early age. She studied viola and composition at the Royal College of Music (1926-30), where many of her early compositions were performed. Despite periods of relative poverty and the need to work in isolation, she was a prolific and versatile composer of chamber concertos, radio and film scores and opera.
