Edward Hill was a Student (Fellow) of Christ Church, Oxford, from 1827 to 1850; he took a First Class Honours Degree in Mathematics in 1830 and was later an Examiner in that subject for Oxford University. His positions in the Church of England included Perpetual Curate of Stratton Audley, in North Oxfordshire (1836), and of Christchurch, Hougham, near Dover, Kent (1844). He was Rector of Sheering, Essex, from 1849 onwards, and an Honorary Canon of St Alban's Cathedral, Hertfordshire, from 1872.
