Born in Nottinghamshire and grew up in Suffolk Allenby failed Indian Civil Service entrance exams then chose an army career, joining a cavalry regiment in 1882 in South Africa. Between 1888 and 1890 in the role of captain he earned himself the nickname 'the Bull' for his temper, imposing presence and obsession with discipline and orders.
