A political economist, Ricardo was influenced by Adam Smith's theories on the development of capitalist economies. In his On the Principles of Economy and Taxation, 1817, Ricardo discussed several ideas which became fundamental laws of economics. One such law related to anti-protectionism which led to the formulation of later free-trade policies and the Repeal of the Corn Laws.
