Hicks studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before embarking on his career in interior design in 1954, with a well publicised makeover of his mother's London house. With antique dealer Tom Parr he opened Hicks and Parr (1956-9) and in 1959 his own shop David Hicks Ltd, opened on Lowndes Street, Knightsbridge. Hicks's adventurous colour combinations and furniture arrangements became associated with the 'Swinging Sixties' scene.
