Stage and film actress who began her career in 1950 and joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1958. Particularly known for her classic repertoire, she has played all the leading female roles in Shakespeare and Chekhov, most memorably Ophelia, Juliet and Viola.
