Known throughout his life as 'Jack', C. S. Lewis was the son of a Belfast solicitor. His undergraduate career at Oxford was interrupted by his call-up in the First World War, but he returned to complete his degree and in 1925 was elected to a Fellowship at Magdalen College. From 1954 to 1963 he held the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge.
