Vane-Tempest was made MP for the Irish seat of County Down in 1878, but left the Commons in 1884 on the death of his father when he entered the House of Lords as Earl Vane. He was appointed Viceroy of Ireland in 1886 where he proved himself a staunch Unionist and supporter of property rights.
