Entered the Royal Navy in 1907, but resigned to pursue a literary career, a plan that was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. He spent most of the war interned in Antwerp, where he wrote his first novel, The Gunroom (1919), recounting his experiences as a young midshipman in the pre-war Royal Navy.
