Journalist and newspaper manager. Bell was born in Alexandria and, after studying in England, returned there to work for the merchants, Peel & Co, in 1865. For the next ten years he combined a successful career in the firm with journalism as the Egyptian correspondent for The Times. Bell's exceptional knowledge of Egyptian affairs was displayed in three books published between 1884 and 1888 as well as in his reports for the newspaper.
