by Sir Francis Carruthers Gould ('F.C.G.')

This is one of many cartoons by Gould concerning the inquiries of a parliamentary select committee into the notorious Jameson raid of 1896, whereby Rhodes had sought to unseat the government of President Kruger in South Africa. Although Rhodes was censured by the South African Committee, the government resisted calls to punish him, Chamberlain claiming he had done nothing affecting his 'personal position as a man of honour'.
