This engraving was made for an edition of William Robertson's influential History of Scotland during the Reigns of Mary and James VI, which provided inspiration for a number of history painters in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The book was criticised for its lack of impartiality and the favourable light in which it cast Mary, but the drama with which Robertson recounted various episodes in her life, particularly in Scotland,
