Beaumont Hotham was a soldier, peer and long-standing Conservative Member of Parliament. He served in the Peninsular War from 1812 to 1814 and fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, later attaining the rank of general. In 1814, he had succeeded his grandfather as third Baron Hotham, but as this was an Irish peerage, it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords.
