Publisher; born in Vienna, came to Britain in the 1930s and worked for BBC Monitoring Service (1939-42) and as a News Commentator (1942-5); columnist on News Chronicle (1945-6); spent one year as political adviser and Chief of Cabinet to Chaim Weizmann, (President of Israel 1948-52); Founder of Contact Magazine and Books (1945); Founder and Chairman (1948) of publishers Weidenfeld & Nicolson; created Life Peer (1976); Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery (1988-95).
