Biochemist. Martin worked at the Dunn Nutritional Laboratories and the Wool Industries Research Association before joining the staff of the Medical Research Council where he worked from 1948 to 1959. Subsequently he was Director of the Abbotsbury Laboratories (1959-70). He shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Richard Synge for the development of paper chromatography, 1952.
