Antonio Canova was an Italian sculptor who became famous for his delicate rendering of flesh in his marble sculptures. He studied at Venice and Rome, and came to be regarded as the founder of a new Neoclassicist school; his work marked a return to classical refinement after the theatrical excesses of Baroque sculpture.
