Muffin the Mule first appeared on For the Children in 1946, his strings pulled by Ann Hogarth, while Annette Mills sang and played the piano. Shortly after, they were given a whole programme and, with other characters including Sally the sealion, Louise the lamb and Monty the monkey, rapidly became a favourite on children's television. After the death of Annette Mills, sister of actor Sir John Mills, Muffin breifly moved to ITV before returning for a final series with the BBC in 1957.
