Born Marjorie Robertson in Essex, she first appeared on stage in 1917, and in 1925 joined the chorus line in C.B. Cochran revues, taking her mother's name in 1930. Her first film, Goodnight Vienna (1932), was directed by her future husband Herbert Wilcox, with whom she was to make thirty-two films.
