Born in Petrograd, (now St. Petersburg), Russia, the son of a diplomat in the service of the Russian Tsar, Anatole de Grunwald's family fled to England during the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Having started working as a journalist, de Grunwald turned to screenwriting in 1939 for the British film industry, then became a producer.
