At about the time of this photograph, Tennyson received his first audience with Queen Victoria at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The queen described the meeting in her journal, noting that he was 'very peculiar looking, tall, dark, with a fine head, long black flowing hair and a beard-oddly dressed, but there is no affectation about him'. Prince Albert had died the previous year and the queen thanked Tennyson for the comfort that she had found in reading In Memoriam.
