Garrett established the first interior design business run by women, working with her cousin Rhoda Garrett. Initially intending to train as architects, the cousins tried for several years to become apprentices, being taken on by the architect J.M. Brydon in 1871. The Garrett's business included designing furniture and wallpapers aimed at middle-class customers with modest incomes, and they ran a school of interior design.
