Began his career in art administration in 1923 as an Assistant Keeper and lecturer at the Wallace Collection in London, despite his having no formal training in art history. He then spent three years in Italy compiling the Gardner Museum catalogue, after which he was made Curator of Paintings at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
