Alfred Hopkinson was called to the Bar in 1873. Living in Manchester, he built a successful legal practice on the Northern Circuit. He was also Professor of Law at the Owens College (now Manchester University). He moved to London in 1889 and was elected to Parliament as an MP in 1895, but he resigned his seat and returned to Manchester in 1898 on being appointed Principal of the Owens College.
