Queen Mary worked tirelessly for charities and welfare services throughout the First World War. With the King she visited France in 1917 and inspected army headquarters, hospitals and casualty units. She also imposed a strictly frugal regime on the Royal Household throughout the war. She is seen here inspecting the Green Cross. Princess Mary is visable just behind.
