Prime Minister, 1762-3. Unpopular as a Scot and for his influence on the young George III, Bute was blamed for making peace with France in 1763 at the expense of Prussia and was forced to resign, but continued to retain the King's confidence despite criticism of his role in public affairs. A passionate botanist and distinguished patron of the arts.
