The leading Neo-classical sculptor in late eighteenth-century Britain, Flaxman worked first as a designer for Josiah Wedgwood who later financed his journey to study in Italy (1787-94). John Flaxman's seven-year stay in Rome transformed him from an obscure British designer and sculptor into a major international figure with a proven record in monumental sculpture and decorative design.
