Frederic Leighton was one of Victorian Britain’s most renowned painters. Born in Scarborough, Leighton received academic training in various European cities. His first exhibited work Cimabue's Madonna, painted in Rome in 1855, was a triumph at the Royal Academy's exhibition and its success marked Leighton as one of the most promising artists of his generation. He was elected President of the RA in 1878 and became one of the most successful holders of the office.
