Their debut single Wannabe (1996) topped the charts in 53 countries and was the first of six consecutive British number ones. With names invented by Top of the Pops magazine, 'Scary', 'Ginger', 'Baby', 'Posh' and 'Sporty' spice rode on a triumphant slogan of 'Girl Power' and heralded the empowerment of women in pop.
