Hugh Percy entered Parliament as an MP in 1806 where he remained until raised to the House of Lords in 1812. He was not a great contributor to debates in either House, but he was strongly opposed to Catholic emancipation. In 1829 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a post he held for just one year. On his return to England, he retired from political life. Percy served as Chancellor of Cambridge University from 1840 until 1847.
