The creator of Sherlock Holmes, one of literature's best-known detectives, Doyle began his career as an eye doctor. His first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1887. The stories were so successful that Doyle gave up his medical practice in 1891 to write. By 1893, he had so tired of his famous detective that he killed him off in the Final Problem.
