by Robert Graves, after George Sharples

Born in London in 1758, William Esdaile received a commercial education from his father, a banker and former Lord Mayor of London. As part of his successful business in banking Esdaile owned mortgages on two sugar plantations in Jamaica for which he received compensation when slavery in the British Empire was abolished. Esdaile used his wealth to build substantial collections of prints, drawings, statues, fossils and coins. After his death these were sold and dispersed to various public collections in the UK.
