A distinguished lawyer and an active member of parliament, Coventry was instrumental in enforcing Charles I's royal proclamations. Appointed Attorney-General in 1621 and Lord Keeper in 1625, he remained personally popular with both the King and parliamentary leaders, acting as a mediator between the two in 1629. He was a strong statesman and an influential speaker, and it was said that he '...had a clear conception of the whole policy of the government both of Church and state.'
