First elected President of the Transvaal Republic in 1883, Paul Kruger was a leader of Boer resistance against the British during the war. Affectionately known as 'Uncle Paul' (Oom Paul in Afrikaans), he went on to win the subsequent elections of 1888, 1893 and 1898. Kruger tried to negotiate favourable terms for the Boers, but when war seemed inevitable he sent an ultimatum to Britain on 9 October 1899.
