Richardson studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and worked as an industrial designer before moving to Paris in 1950. There he became close friends with Picasso of whose work he organised a nine-gallery retrospective in New York in 1962. As an art dealer, he was head of Christie's US operations and was later Vice President of Knoedler and Co.
