Robert Gifford, 1st Baron Gifford, was called to the Bar in 1812 and practised law on the Western Circuit. He rose rapidly, and in 1817, he became Solicitor General. Gifford entered Parliament later that year, and was appointed Attorney General two years later. In 1821, he addressed the House of Lords in support of the Bill of Pains and Penalties that was brought against Queen Caroline.
