Young studied at Oxford, receiving a law fellowship at All Souls College in 1708. He was a friend of Thomas Tickell and George Bubb Dodington (Baron Melcombe), and a member of Joseph Addison's literary circle. He wrote Busiris, and the Revenge, produced at Drury Lane, 1719-21, and published a series of satires, The Universal Passion, 1725. He was appointed chaplain to King George II, 1728.
