Edward Thomas NPG 2892

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Ernest Henry Thomas

The oldest of the war poets to enlist, in the Artists' Rifles, Thomas was already an established author, critic and journalist, and much of his work was inspired by rural England, as in The South Country (1909); encouraged to write poetry by his friend Robert Frost, his war poems, including In Memoriam, Easter 1915, were published and widely acclaimed after his death, killed by a shell-blast in Arras.
