Elected as an MP in 1895, and entered the House of Lords in 1913. After the war, responsible for bringing bread supplies back to normal. He was promoted to the Cabinet in 1922, but the coalition government collapsed later that year, and he resigned from politics. Crawford embarked on a second career in the arts, becoming a trustee of the British Museum and chairman of the Royal Fine Arts Commission.
