Painter; first made his name with historical genre scenes; in 1850s turned to large-scale contemporary subjects, painted with painstaking detail, like Ramsgate Sands (1853), Derby Day (1858), and The Railway Station (1862), which were immensely popular; later turned to morality subjects.
