Born in Bournemouth, Wade was raised in South Africa before attending Sussex University. She became a professional tennis player in 1968 and was the first woman to be elected to the Wimbledon Committee. She was the number one British female tennis player for over a decade and was ranked in the world top ten for thirteen consecutive years.
