Hely-Hutchinson entered the Irish Parliament as an MP in 1776. On his mother's death in 1788, Hely-Hutchinson succeeded to her barony of Donoughmore. He was a strong supporter of Catholic emancipation and the Anglo-Irish union. In 1821 Hely-Hutchinson was made Viscount Hutchinson in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was a leading advocate of Catholic relief in the House of Lords, where he presented many petitions from Irish Catholics.
